Great Northern indomitable

FOR the third year in a row, Great Northern Football League (GNFL) sailed through the Northern Regions Colts Carnival held at Wongan Hills on the weekend undefeated to prove, once again, they are an indomitable force in the competition.

Winning all of their preliminary games, some by monstrous margins, they had no trouble claiming a grand final berth and take the Bert McClements Shield.

And then when it came to selection for the All Stars squad to represent the Northern Suns at the coming Country Championships in July the GNFL claimed 16 of their number (almost all of their carnival side) while North Midlands FL found three and Central Midlands Coastal FL, Avon FL and Mortlock FL scored four apiece.

No doubting the quality of Great Northern's football and the success of the carnival which gleaned good spectator numbers but the results had somewhat of a Clayton's flavour with the Avon FL fronting without a full squad.

It was hard to find a colt from the town of Northam as the rest was made up of their country centres in the league and finally on Sunday they fronted with only 13.

In their preliminary games, numbers were matched by the opposition and with that proviso, won all of their games except one to GNFL.

This should have put them into a grand final with GNFL but the rules demanded a full side.

With this, Mortlock, who had won three of their four preliminaries and should have ranked third on the list were promoted to Avon's spot and found their berth against GNFL in the final bout.

Mortlock gave it their all with this golden opportunity of making a name for themselves regardless of the path they were to take, but the inevitable was to happen to the tune of some seven goals.

All in all, a great experience for the participants who displayed a calibre of football far beyond their title of colts.

Country Week championships

New Colts coach Bob Lomas has been appointed coach of Northern Suns in preparation for the upcoming Country Week championships.

He is currently assistant league coach for the Calingiri Cougars as well as assistant colts coach for the Kingsley football club in Perth.

An accredited level two coach, he has had years of coaching and playing experience behind him like some 180 games as a junior coach. His assistant is Brad Lyon from the Wongan-Ballidu club who continues to make himself available in that role.

All Stars have been booked into Mandurah Holiday Village from July 10 and continuing Thursday and Friday with transport arranged depending on finals.

Players are given socks, a jumper, shorts, a polo shirt and a jacket.

They retain the shirts as a keepsake.
