THERE were plenty of celebrations at Moora on Sunday when Warriors’ player Steve Yappo played his 400th league game for the club in the Central Midlands and Coastal Football League.
Unfortunately going up against the ladder leaders Cervantes meant the party wasn’t going to be on the field.
After the pre-game build up where Yappo was presented with a jumper with the number 400, coach Gary Purser carrying on the sense of occasion, started the game with Yappo in the centre with his sons Richard, Les and Courtney.
Brother Joe and nephews Brayden and Matty also took to the field to make it very much a family game.
This combination started well and many were surprised to see Warriors get the first goal on the board, Cervantes looking a little disorganised with nine players from the reserves team called up to fill in for injuries and absent players.
Cervantes didn’t take long to get things on track, getting their system from the centre working.
The experience of Julian and Polmear provided a steadying influence and accurate delivery into the forward line where Lord and Bradshaw reaped the benefits.
Cervantes took a five goal lead into the first change.
With Warriors missing key position players Smith and Prior, many of their forward thrusts were thwarted before goal and with Cervantes’ precise ball movement and Warriors’ lack of defensive traits, the Tigersharks were quick to move the ball to the other end and score relatively easily.
A half time margin of 46 points quickly blew out in the third quarter as Cervantes lifted their work rate, piling on 10 goals to one making good use of the breeze that favoured the end to which they were kicking.
With a fair bit of the sting gone from the game, Cervantes idled through the final term to take the game with a 136 point margin.
Chris Bradshaw kicked 11 to increase his lead at the top of the goal kicking table, Tyson Lord bagged five, two each to Lee Averill and Matt Thompson while Juhren, Polmear and Howes got one each.
With Warriors missing full forward Prior, they lacked a focal point up front but Cameron Ashby and Richard Yappo kicked two each, Codie Begg and Les Yappo getting one apiece.
Better players for Cervantes were Lord, Bradshaw, Polmear, Josh Howes and Liam Radford.
On a big day for the Yappo family Richard, Les, Courtney and Steve made the best player list. With seven Yappos taking the field it was a fair chance there would be a couple in it.
Kev Wyatt and Cam Ashby also played their usual solid games.
Bulldogs
triumph in tricky conditions
Using every bit of their home ground advantage saw Jurien Bay get over the top of Rovers at the coast last week.
Rovers had first use of a four goal breeze and kicked four goal four behinds.
The waywardness allowed Jurien, who played well into the breeze, to keep in touch with four goals straight and well poised to push Rovers in the second term.
The Bulldogs were quick to use the wind with quick ball movement into the forward line seeing them kick six, while Rovers fought hard to maintain defensive pressure but were still able to kick three goals to keep in touch.
With the half time margin 16 points in favour of Jurien and the strength of the breeze increasing, the game was set to go with the team that could make best use of the ball with the wind and able to back that up with smart defence going against it.
Rovers had their best quarter in the third, quickly overhauling Jurien’s lead kicking seven majors while Jurien battled hard for their three to leave Rovers with just an eight point advantage going into the final term, the Bulldogs heading home with the increasing wind at their backs.
Rovers were unable to mount a good enough defensive wall in the final term, surprisingly not playing any spare man in defence, also hampered by the loss of a Jake Manning who was carded.
Rovers’ efforts to protect their slim margin were nowhere near enough to in the face of a wind assisted Jurien attack that kicked six goals to one and take the game by 21 points.
Jurien spread the goals around, Nathan Sumpton and Josh Lyons kicking four each, Clayton, Ashworth, Blakeney and Shaun Lyons all kicked two while Passamani, Heu and Rowe picked up singles.
For Rovers, the goals came courtesy of Glen Henderson and Jim Hamilton who kicked three each, Jye Dodd, Tim King and Matt Lowden got two each and singles to Ben Cousins, Owen Langley and Luke Praciak.
A good team effort from Jurien who ran on once they got their tails up, John Murray, Matt Ashworth, Rod Gibson and the Lyons boys making the best player list.
Praciak and Henderson headed the Rovers best player list, Kenny Narrier, Paul Rumbold and Craig Whyte also making solid contributions.
Rovers will be disappointed by this loss given their form of recent weeks against the similarly positioned teams on the ladder.
They still have some key players out and will be looking for a good run into the finals and to get a game or two ahead of Jurien to secure the home ground for the first semi final.
A good four quarter effort from Jurien who needed the win to improve their position in the four, the home ground advantage for the finals a big boost to which ever of these two teams have it.
Saints cruise against Pirates
Again in windy conditions at the coast, Dandaragan recorded a comfortable win against the Lancelin Ledge Point Pirates in the game played at Lancelin last Sunday.
Dandaragan got the benefit of the wind in the first term, and kicked away to an early lead with six goals eight, Lancelin failing to open their account in the tricky conditions.
Lancelin were able to get some score on the board in the second quarter kicking three which was commendable but for the fact that the Saints further increased their margin by kicking another six.
Lancelin sorely missed Stokke’s presence in the centre against Dandaragan’s reliable midfield, the Saints quickly moving the ball forward to Hurst, back in the side at full forward, to put the game well out of the Pirates’ reach with a seven goal to nil effort.
As in most of the one-sided games, the intensity and sting went out of the game in the final term, both teams seemingly just wanting to get it over and done with, Dandaragan heading away with a 119 point win.
Campbell Hurst kicked seven for the Saints, 10 other players getting on the score sheet with Ben Milligan three, Dann, Smith, Rennie and Pitt kicking two each, singles kicked by Donnelly, Harris, Stribley, Bean and Shields.
Best players for the Saints were lead by Matt Helms who would be at short odds to go back to back in the JJ Lussick medal for the association fairest and best, ably supported by Campbell Hurst, Ian Rennie and Cale Tomlinson.
For the Pirates, the better players were listed as Dave Jones, Grant Park, Erik Innes, Kurt King and Luke Innes.
A result as most would have expected, Dandaragan having no problems heading into the finals and should be in good shape to provide worthy opposition to Cervantes.
CMCFL games this week
There is a top of the table clash in Cervantes on Saturday this week when the Tigersharks host their main competition this season, the Dandaragan Saints.
Cervantes have been untouchable so far this season but seem to be having some issues with availability of their entire playing group on any given week.
They will need to start settling heading into the finals as Dandaragan have shown they can work away on any chinks in the opposition armour and cause upset.
Cervantes should win but do not be surprised if Dandaragan give them a bit of a wake up.
The Lancelin Ledge Point Pirates are at home to Jurien Bay, also on Saturday and the Bulldogs will be looking to string together a few wins in a row in their run to the finals.
If Lancelin can get a couple of players back from injury they could take this game right up to the Bulldogs who should just get over the line.
The final Moora Derby takes place on Sunday between Warriors and Rovers and the fact that both sides have key players out will make this a very even affair.
Rovers have had the wood over Warriors for some years would be confident of making it another clean sweep for the year the only thing that may stop them is who turns up on the day for Warriors.
