THE Chaplains Cup Interschool Basketball Carnival was held on Monday, October 19 and involved six schools and almost 100 students.
Twenty-eight games were played on the day at Wongan Hills, using the Wongan Recreation Centre and Wongan Hills District High School courts.
The competition was run by YouthCARE, with school chaplains Jason Johnston (Wongan Hills DHS), Greg McNeil (Dalwallinu DHS), Rachael Dobra (Gingin DHS), Lamvay Phan (Jurien Bay DHS) and Doug McGhee (Central Midlands Senior High School) and teacher Corleen Oosthuizen (Bindoon Catholic Agricultural College) bringing students and teams together.
“The standard of competition and sportsmanship was excellent this year, with all schools forming competitive teams in the girls and boys competitions, even with a couple of state players displaying their skills,” Mr McGhee said.
Gingin DHS won the competition, with their boys and girls teams both winning the championship games against Central Midlands (boys) and Wongan Hills (girls) in the finals.
An All Star game was played at the end of the day, with top most valuable voted players from each school playing against the chaplains and teachers.
The chaplains/teachers team won the close game against the students.
“Socialising opportunities were provided to encourage sportsmanship, with ‘people bingo’ at the start of the day, and a sausage sizzle to end a wonderful day of competition,” Mr McGhee said.
