Shire backs clubs with grants

04 Sep, 2008 03:06 PM
THE Badgingarra and Jurien Bay Tennis Clubs have received funding from the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund.

The Dandaragan Shire applies for the State Government program each year with all the applications for CSRF coming through the shire which then assesses each application with a set of criteria.

This year the Badgingarra Tennis Club received $50,000 and the Jurien Tennis Club $26,000 because of a carryover of funds from the previous year.

In the past two years the shire has supported two tennis clubs and two bowling clubs.

The tennis clubs have re-surfaced four of their courts and the bowling clubs converted their grass greens to synthetic.

“What we have found in the past was that clubs were having to borrow the money to do any major infrastructure and rather than clubs taking on huge debts, this policy will help – one third funding CSRF, one third local government and the other one third the clubs,” Shire chief executive officer Clington Strugnell said.

“This will help the clubs remain debt free and be able to use their own funds for maintaining their own infrastructure. “If every club starts with new infrastrtucture debt free, by the time the life of that infrastructure is up, the clubs should be fairly cashed up and be able to be financial enough to re-apply for another supporting loan,” he said.
