Marine education for Moora students

10 Nov, 2004 11:56 AM
LAST week, upper primary school children swapped the classroom for the beach and headed out to Jurien Bay where CALM Marine Conservation Officer Lee Butcher instructed them in the wonders of marine habitat.

Schools from Moora, Cervantes, Eneabba, Badgingarra, Jurien Bay and Leeman participated in marine educational activities run by the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM).

Marine Park Coordinator, Kevin Crane said activities included a marine discovery pool, where students had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the marine species found in the Jurien Bay Marine Park.

Mr Crane said they learnt about some of the special adaptations of the plants and animals and also relationships between species and their habitats.

An activity called flotsam and jetsam introduced children to the impacts of rubbish on our marine wildlife.

"Entanglements, injury and death to sea lions, fur seals, seabirds and other wildlife are an all too common sight in our coastal waters," Mr Crane said.

"By taking more care when on the beach or in the water we can all ensure the amount of rubbish entering the marine environment is minimised," he said.

CALM have been taking an active role in the marine education of children in the region as part of their education and community participation programs.

"These activities follow visits to schools by CALM in the past 12 months to give talks on the marine environment," Mr Crane said.

"These ongoing education programs also continue to foster close relationships between CALM and the Education Department to the benefit of all people along the Central West Coast.

"It will be these children who will be the future custodians of our wonderful marine environment."
