Help sought to trace asonist

11 Feb, 2010 02:24 PM
DANDARAGAN residents have been asked to help identify a person suspected of lighting fires in the area.

The shire’s emergency services co-ordinator, Phil Hay, said the fire bug was suspected of lighting fires in Badgingarra and Cataby.

He has called for assistance from the public to locate the fire bug.

Mr Hay said there was concern that a total of 13 fires had been lit over an eleven day period following the two major fires in the Badgingarra area that had threatened properties.

"People give up their own time and put their lives at risk to fight these fires."

While they still had no suspect identified Mr Hay said there was mounting evidence to indicate the fires were deliberately lit.

Despite the fact that there had been no new fires since the call went out for people to be on the lookout for anything suspicious, Mr Hay said it was important for people to continue to be alert and take as much information about people acting suspiciously.

“The strange car parked on the side of the road may be innocent, but if it seems unusual we ask people to take down details and let us know so we can investigate it,” said Mr Hay.

Suspicious behavior can be reported directly to the Shire of Dandaragan or to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
