Cop's Corner: police kept busy in Northam and Wongan Hills

09 Feb, 2012 11:12 AM
THE ‘dog’ is missing.

Sometime during the weekend the statue of the working dog behind the iconic draught horse in Federation Park, Moora, was stolen.

This incident is an act of gross abuse to public property and obviously a planned theft.

The legs of the dog have been cut off with an angle grinder, leaving two stumps on the rock foundation.

Police believe it is the act of local vandals and appeal to whoever they are to do the right thing and return the statue.

Should anyone have seen or heard anything in relation to the theft please contact the station.

Northam riot

On Saturday afternoon Moora police were called in by Wheatbelt Operations to assist Northam police with anti-social behaviour and fighting that had broken out in the town.

It is believed two families in the town have ongoing issues and on Saturday the fighting reached an explosive stage, resulting in weapons involved in the altercation.

Four people were arrested and faced the Perth Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning on charges related to the incident.

It is believed that further charges will be made.

Traffic control

Moora officers also assisted traffic control during last week’s fires at Wannamal and Bindoon areas.

Sometime during last weekend a red Honda TRX350 quad bike was stolen from a farming property on Cataby Road, Dandaragan.

Police urge farmers to lock all their vehicles and leave all property secure.

We understand this is an inconvenience on a working property but at least it will act as a deterrent if access is not made too easy.

Wongan Hills with Sergeant Ben Tomasini

Local police have been kept busy in the past week attending various tasks.

On January 30, officers were called to assist with fires burning in the shires of Wundowie Chittering.

The Wundowie blaze was fortunately brought under control with minimal damage to property, while the Wannamal/Bindoon fire caused extensive bushland and property destruction before it could be controlled.

With bushfire season upon us it is a timely reminder to take care and prevent bushfires.

The FESA website (fesa.wa.gov.au) has the Prepare-Act-Survive brochure that can be downloaded which contains information relating to protecting property and lives.

Bike accident

On the first day back at school an accident occurred when a bike rider collided with a car backing out of a driveway.

The rider escaped with minor injuries and the driver was left shaken.

Please take care when in control of a vehicle, one moment’s lapse in concentration is all it takes to have an accident.

Parents please take the time to discuss bike and road safety topics regularly with your children.

For more information and advice the Wongan Hills Police Station has worksheets and pamphlets relating to road safety and behaviour that you are welcome to collect.

In court

On February 1 Sgt Tomasini and Senior Constable Hinch attended the Northam Magistrates Court for the trial of the juvenile offender who broke into and stole items of property from Ruralvision in October, 2010.

After an exhaustive trial the juvenile male was found guilty of burglary.

He was sentenced to a six-month community based order and 60 hours community service.
