Artists celebrate Wheatbelt summer

29 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
WHEN most farming families are heading for the coast and welcome sea breezes, artists Kath Wheatley and Uta Sommer decided to take a camping trip to capture images of a Wheatbelt summer.

“Everyone thought we were crazy,” Ms Wheatley said.

“Sitting out there in the baking heat, but we really wanted to do something radical and go the opposite way to everyone else.”

The outcome is a series of oil and acrylic paintings from Ballidu, Lake Grace, Kulin and Condinin now on display at the Ballidu Art Gallery.

Wheatley already has a strong connection with the Wongan-Ballidu community having supplied a sculpture for an art in the streets promotion, which the shire later purchased and which is still on display in Wongan.

It was this connection that saw the exhibition end up in Ballidu.

Though Ms Wheatley’s usual medium is sculpture, she has welcomed the opportunity to get back into some painting.

The exhibition is on now and continues until October 10.
